Eowyn and the Witch King by JakeMurray Eowyn and the Witch King by JakeMurray
Final piece for the "Eowyn and the Nazgul" challenge at ArtOrder.ning . Pen and ink drawing on hot press bristol board. Going for something Franklin Booth-ish, though that man's work is just ridiculous.

Gorgeous ink line work, amazing! (I'm on a Tolkien kick right now, and keep browsing DA for Tolkien-related art that ISN'T just copies of photos from the movies).

Thanks, you're too kind! Was actually looking at this piece yesterday and thinking I'd like to do more Tolkien pen drawings soon. :)

You should, I would love to see you do something similar of Smaug and Bilbo's conversation in his lair.

Awesome use of the ink, Jake. Love the patterns and textures created by the line work. And yeah, Booth is the bomb! "Painter with a pen," indeed (although personally, I'm more of a brush guy, myself, lol). :D

I'm just wondering, how long did it take to draw and ink the picture?

I honestly don't remember exactly. I'd say the drawing took probably somewhere around 4 hours and the inking maybe like 8? But that's just a rough guess!

Thanks a lot! I love Dore's etchings. They're so freakin' ridiculous haha.

I didn't even know how he actually made them for years, lol.

I thought they were all inked or done in pencil or something.
I was so wrong o.o

Believe me, I know first-hand how tedious the work was! I don't think I could actually do this level of line work with pen-and-ink anymore, hand cramps up terribly now... I'd have to resort to my Wacom tablet and the pen tool set with a little bit of "smoothing" in order to make so many straight lines. Getting old stinks sometimes :P

And I forgot to mention the elegant flow of your fabric, hair, clouds, smoke and banners :D

Looks like something that would have been an illustration in one of the older LOTR paperbacks from the '60s or '70s.

Reminds me very much of one of my favorite artists: John R. Neill. (Best known for illustrating the Oz books)

Great work!
